Doug Wechsler

Director, VIREO (Visual Resources for Ornithology)

The Academy of Natural Sciences

Since 1987, I have served as Director of VIREO. Over this period the collection has grown from 45,000 images to 130,000 images. It has been my privilege to work with some of the best bird photographers in the world and a special pleasure to shoot with some of them in the wild. One of these days, I will prepare a short phrase book of expressions they use when just missing the ultimate bird shot.

EXPEDITIONS   Over the past decade and a half, I have participated in and organized expeditions around the world to augment the VIREO collection. My travels have taken me to Ecuador, Borneo, the Lesser Antilles, the Philippines, Cuba, Guyana, Panama, Cameroon, Alaska, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Cayman Islands, and Brazil. This has resulted in 5,000 new photos and hundreds of new species for VIREO.

MY BOOKS   Academy expeditions and personal travels have given me plenty of fodder for children's books. My first book, Bizarre Bugs, was published in 1995. That was followed by Bizarre Birds (1999) and three series: The Really Wild Life of Snakes (2001), The Really Wild Life of Birds of Prey (2001),The Really Wild Life of Frogs (2002)andFrog Heaven: Ecology of a Vernal Pool (2006).

MY PHOTOGRAPHS   Photography also takes up much of my free time. To see some more of my work visit my Agpix website. My photographs have been published in most of the major natural history magazines and photographic bird guides. They have appeared in numerous general interest publications, books, calendars, CD-ROMs, museum exhibits, and zoos.
